Podshow… Does that deal make sense?

I listened to Adam and Ron’s roadshow pitches for the Podshow deal. Here’s my summary of their story. I think some of it’s right and some of it’s wrong — this podcast is about my take on the story they’re telling, and the deal they made. I’m not sure that Internet-users and podcasters are going to run along the tracks that Ron and Adam have laid out for them. I think Dave Winer may have the right interpretation of this deal…

    Hi, just wanted to say your podcast is one of the best because you seem to know what you are talking about and are sincere. Just wanted to know how do you think a podcaster who isn’t in it for the money can finance the bandwith costs (maybe an isp sponsor?). Cheers

    The “bandwidth problem” is a head-scratcher. My friend Michael Koppelman expanded on my theme when he pointed out in a podcast not long ago that lots of podcasts waste bandwidth. They’re downloaded, thus consuming the bandwidth, but then never played. So podcasting is kindof backwards… The more successful you are, the harder it is to fund the bandwidth.

    I plug my ISP (IPHouse) because they give me the bandwidth for free and I’m starting to feel a bit guilty about that. I think it’s costing them about $150/month to support the bandwidth this show consumes — getting something on the order of 20,000 “impressions” a month for $150 probably isn’t a terrible deal. But on the other hand, I’m not sure how effective those impressions are at actually driving any business their way. So by all means, if you can get your ISP to sponsor you, that would be a good plan.
