Thanks so much for the series -- I'm glad you did them and that you plan to make them continuously available though you're move on to other things. I learned a lot from each of them, without exception, and they have guided my own work (mostly radio). This short comment here can't adequately express my debt to you.

Hi Leif,

This would be a good one to take to the folks coordinating the recovery effort -- but, although I have lots of ideas, I have no connections. :-)

Are you a member of a trade association that addresses the wastewater treatement industry? Maybe they could put together a "helpful hints" podcast that could be used to inform the recovery people? Certainly a recommendation like what you're suggesting would carry a lot more weight if it came from a group like that. It would be easy to help put a podcast like that together.

I work in the water-wastewater treatment and distribuiton field. I would like to get a suggestion to the right people.
If we were to spread granular calcium chloride by air or boat into the flooded streets of New Orleans, there would be a significant decrease in the waterbourne pathogens. Since calcium chloride is 50% Cl2 is would distribute the most disinfection quickly. Since it is widely used in swimming pools, there should be sufficient supplies in warehouses around the country. This could prevent many deaths and illnesses as you know. Thanks for your help in getting this plan established. Leif Utegaard

Hi back! and thanks for the kind words.

The "bandwidth problem" is a head-scratcher. My friend Michael Koppelman expanded on my theme when he pointed out in a podcast not long ago that lots of podcasts waste bandwidth. They're downloaded, thus consuming the bandwidth, but then never played. So podcasting is kindof backwards... The more successful you are, the harder it is to fund the bandwidth.

I plug my ISP (IPHouse) because they give me the bandwidth for free and I'm starting to feel a bit guilty about that. I think it's costing them about $150/month to support the bandwidth this show consumes -- getting something on the order of 20,000 "impressions" a month for $150 probably isn't a terrible deal. But on the other hand, I'm not sure how effective those impressions are at actually driving any business their way. So by all means, if you can get your ISP to sponsor you, that would be a good plan.

I note from your site that you are in Argentina! Very cool.

Hi Rich,

Great to hear from a fellow community radio type person.

I think the reason I'm so grouchy about broad-audience podcasting is partly because of the bandwidth problem (podcasting gets really expensive for the hobbyist as subscribers and downloads rise), and partly because gunning for big audiences can lead to bad choices with regard to programming.

But I agree with everything you say in your comment -- I love the flexibility and portability too. And, if a podcast is really good, and the person can stay with it even as it turns into a mass-audience thing, that's really neat.

Re: Sex, Podcasting, Radio and Eric

Hey Mike

I'm a former community radio jock. 15 years on KVMR FM in Nevada City, Calif. I also did my stints on the board of directors and the program committee.

I have listened to all of your shows and enjoying them. I think you have missed a very important concept in this particular podcast. You completely missed the flexibility of internet radio. It can work for the narrow caster - like me, I suppose (I have been broadcasting "traditional" Hawaiian music 24 hours a day since 1999), or the "broad" caster. It can be changed and molded on a moments notice. It can be extremely easy and cheap to get set up and running. And with high speed and wireless connections readily available in so many areas, it can even be extremely portable.

I have a friend in Vancouver, BC that has a "real radio station" that is only on the internet. He has a rotation of young DJs that come in 'round the clock to do air shifts on a firm schedule. It is exactly like a community radio station. I was blown away when he told me all about it.

I think that the convergence of all of these things - including podcasts and video blogging, are creating an unprecedented opportunity for those inclined to EASILY get involved on whatever level. It's really exciting to see what some folks are doing with video, and that's where I plan to branch out.

Anyway, thoroughly enjoying your thoughts on all of this and finding it inspiring. Got the ol' brain cells buzzing trying to see what path I want to go down with all of these possibilities!!

Hi Griff,

Neat idea. Just curious... Any community-radio type people hanging out in your area? They'd be a great resource for your project if they're around.

Regarding examples -- I had the best luck in Google with "neighborhood podcast" as the search term. There are a boatload of links, and the range is pretty breathtaking. "civic podcasting" and "place podcasting" didn't do so well -- more links to podcast aggregators than anything else.

One of the big advantages you've got is an existing community that will help you answer your "what to do first?" question. I'd try a bunch of things, and encourage people to let you know what they like and don't like through the you ongoing civic-blogging conversations. I spoze you could even go so far as to poll people what kind of podcasts they'd like before you do the first podcast... :-)

To repeat -- a great idea. Let me know how I can help out.

Mike, I like the direction you're going with this and hope to experiment here in Northfield with how podcasts can enhance GEOGRAPHIC community.

We've got a fledgling civic blogosphere going (15-20 local bloggers), with 10,000 unique visitors/month to our site.

I'd like to do some podcasts that not only would serve a useful purpose but also would set an example for the other civic bloggers in town to follow.

I don't know whether to start with commentary/opinion pieces, interviews, soft news, or what.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. And any examples from other citizen journalism type sites, too.

Thanks Mike. I really appreciate your help and I'll be staying subscribed to your podcast! I have had a look at some hosting sites and am considering prices compared with '##'gigabytes of space.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi again,
I have sorted out that part by joining feedburner. But I am having problems finding hosting for my mp3s. I was using 'archive.org' but it isn't time effective (a curator has to listen through the mp3 file first before letting it onto the site). I may just continue using this but have tried to sift through the endless google results to 'free webspace' or 'free podcasting webspace'.

Anyway, thanks for your willingness to help me!

P.s I am using blogger.com

Howdy!

sure thing. but first, some questions. what blogging software are you using? do you have the MP3 file posted somewhere on the Internet? if so, can you share the URL with me? with all those goodies, i can take a quick look and give you some ideas.
